“Edge of Tatami”

Nanaha Co, Ltd is a company that sends the “new form of Japan” to the world through “mattcha”. They provide high quality mattcha in menus that are arranged modernly, such as mattacha latte. The space inside the shop is designed to be a “modern tearoom”, not a “Japanese style tea room”. According to the owner, it is a way of expressing their feeling to make a shop that allows the customers to enjoy the traditional Japanese culture with a modern interpretation.

Many of cultures in Japan had come from ancient China or the Korean Peninsula, but “tatami” is one of the brightest cultures that originate from the wisdom of living by Yamato people. 90% of “tatami”, which is also essential to tea rooms, are produced in Kyushu. Moreover, the rules of tea ceremonies are set based on the “edge of tatami”, meaning that tatamis are indispensable to tea ceremonies. I, therefore, focused on the “edge of tatami” this time. I used the colors and patterns of Hakata ori textiles to produce a contemporary tea room with the hospitality of the Hakata culture.
