“Cloche”

Nanaha Co., Ltd. is a company that sends the “new form of Japan” to the world through “mattcha”. They provide high quality mattcha in menus that are arranged modernly, such as mattacha latte. The space inside the shop is desired to be a “modern tearoom”, not a “Japanese style tea room”. According to the owner, it is a way of expressing their feeling to make a shop that allows the customers to enjoy the traditional Japanese culture with a modern interpretation.

The cafe is located at a shopping mall in Motomachi Hoshigaoka, Nagoya Aichi. Hoshigaoka area has a long history as a famous downtown retail area, it is well known for having a busy street. A woman’s university is in the neighbourhood, and hence interior is designed targeting young women.

A “cloche” (lid) covering food traps temperature and the surprises inside. I wondered if it would be possible to cover the space of the shop, as a place for tea and dining. In order to do so, I opened on the ceiling parallel to the tables accordingly, and then installed mirrors inside. Therefore, the tables with dishes will be reflected, which provide a sense of personal and enclosed space. I hope to enclose the important time for dinging with the cloches.
