Umon KASHIYA YOKOCHO

“Unostentatious shop”
Kawagoe’s sweet shop in Yokocho was once known nation-wide as a shop producing cheap sweets.
Its history starts from Suzuki Tozaemon, who produced a new style of sweets loved by Tokyoites. As they were very fond of his confectionary he decided to establish his own business.
In the time of setting up his 5th candy store UMON in Yokocho, we decided to try a design bearing in mind the theme “unpretentious sweets”.
In fact, we tried to design it as if it existed there for a long time, leaving as much history expressed in the structural features in the building as possible, with a little presence of new characteristics.
The area were ‘warabi mochi’ is prepared was covered with clear glass, whereas its work-stand was made of transparent acrylic. Reception and merchandise shelves were made of steel round bar greed pattern and the design was carried out as minimalistic as possible. Furthermore, we used insulators to make electrical wiring of the ceiling and to match reception and shelves we designed a grid type design.
We hope that UMON confectionary shop in Yokocho will more and more connect history with the presence.
