nana’s green tea HAWAII
Hawaii, USA / 2016

“Nodate”

Nanaha Co., Ltd. is a company that sends the “new form of Japan” to the world through “mattcha”. They provide high quality mattcha in menus that are arranged modernly, such as mattacha latte. The space inside the shop is desired to be a “modern tearoom”, not a “Japanese style tea room”. According to the owner, it is a way of expressing their feeling to make a shop that allows the customers to enjoy the traditional Japanese culture with a modern interpretation.

The location of this time was a section in the basement of “Waikiki YOKOCHO (Hawaii)”, a tenant space isolated from external light.

For this reason I suggested, not to separate “nana’s green tea Hawaii”, not as a single shop, to develop the space that is not indoors or outdoors, like a café where part of the underground shopping center with the spatial composition.

Therefore, I designed it focusing only one point,”Nodate” which is one of traditional tearoom manners.
“Nodate” is to enjoy tea at the good season, while touching nature in the outdoors.
In fact, of a tea ceremony, we have a traditional felt mat called “Mousen”, on the ground, and set a psychological boundary with the outdoors.
But this time, in order to experience “Nodate” in the interior, we original and intentionally set the tree on the side where the boundary is established indoors.
I designed the necessary psychological “boundary” for making “Nodate”.

As an accrual design, I made a Japanese umbrella with just bones, and designed an umbrella through which light passes.
I hope people feel that enjoyment of finding “brisk place” in this space, as “Nodate” is.
