“Rinkan-chanoyu”
Nanaha Co, Ltd is a company that sends the “new form of Japan” to the world through “mattcha”. They provide high quality mattcha in menus that are arranged modernly, such as mattacha latte. The space inside the shop is designed to be a “modern tearoom”, not a “Japanese style tea room”. According to the owner, it is a way of expressing their feeling to make a shop that allows the customers to enjoy the traditional Japanese culture with a modern interpretation.
In medieval times, there was a style of tea ceremony called “rinkan-chanoyu (bathing tea ceremony)”. People loved to bathe since the old times and they had used bathing as a way to entertain guests. “Rinkan-chanoyu” is a tea ceremony combined with bathing. The host prepares a bath for the guests. As soon as the guests enter the house, they take a bath and change into washed kimonos before starting a tea ceremony with refreshed feelings. It was a casual type of tea ceremony, different from Sen-no-Riyu’s “wabi-cha”. Thus, I had made a tea space with a sense of more relaxation and hospitality under the concept of “rinkan-chanoyu”.
