NIKKEN INSTITUTE HAMAMATSU
Shizuoka, Japan / 2010

“Back and front”

Nikken institute is a vocational school that specializes in construction industry. The students in this school are studying to obtain a qualification for architect or construction manager.

Since the client’s request was to create a space considering all students, under the theme of “connecting architectonic and construction”, I suggested a design that intentionally shows the groundwork in wall and ceiling. I purposely cut a part of plasterboard on the wall as well as gyptone on the ceiling and replaced them with clear glasses in order to make “a display of groundwork”.

Therefore, the students are able to see the process of construction and techniques of workmen, which are usually not visible after completion, with their own eyes.
